Preventative Healthcare

Here at Walsh’s Pharmacy we believe in educating our customers in preventative healthcare.  Food is what fuels our bodies: to energize us, to help us grow, and to help us heal. But sometimes what we eat may contribute to problems with weight fluctuation, skin, digestion, energy, pain, etc.  All of our Pharmacists can assist you to know if a supplement might interfere with any medication you are taking.  Our staff are constantly being trained in helping you to choose a food supplement, vitamin or mineral that would suit your nutritional, and other, needs.  This might be digestive support, heart health, brain support, fertility support, joint support, hormonal balance, weightloss, vitamin and mineral support or other conditions like insomnia.  We have a huge variety of supplements to suit everyone; from high end brand products to less expensive generic brands, and in many different forms, i.e. tablets, capsules & liquid.

What are food supplements and why do people take them?

Food supplements are concentrated sources of nutrients that are taken as a dietary top-up. Omega oils, from fish / shellfish (or plants – such as flaxseed oil), have been shown to benefit heart health and are considered food supplements. Minerals, like iron, are another important food supplement.  Iron helps in the formation of hemoglobin which is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.  Iron helps to prevent anaemia and is an important mineral for women of childbearing age and pregnant women.  Supplements contain higher amounts of nutrients than are found in most foods.

In certain circumstances your doctor or pharmacist may advise you to take a food supplement e.g. supplements may be needed for fragile bones and sometimes older people may have difficulty absorbing the nutrients they need from food and need to take extra in supplement form.

Generally, you do not need to take food supplements if you are healthy and eat a normal balanced diet. That means a diet which contains a variety of foods, including fruit and vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, lean meat / fish and starchy foods (preferably wholegrain). And everyone needs to be aware that too much of certain supplements can be harmful and cause unwanted side effects.   That is why it is always important to check with your Doctor or Pharmacist if you are unsure.

Will supplements make up for not eating well?

Taking supplements will not correct a poor diet. We get a lot more nutrients from foods than just one or two vitamins or minerals; we also get energy, protein, fibre and other natural compounds that can have beneficial effects on our health. It’s the combination of nutrients working together in food that keeps us healthy.

Get advice before taking a supplement

Most people who take food supplements don’t check first with their doctor or Pharmacist, which is why we, at Walsh’s Pharmacy recommend that you come to one of our Pharmacies in Spiddal, Loughrea, Oranmore or Corrib Shopping Centre in Galway City for advice to ensure you’re taking the right ones to compliment your diet and that it doesn’t interfere with any medication you are on.
